Culture of Outports

This blog gathers documentation from architecture students involved in a two-week intensive design/build course in the small outport community of Burlington, Newfoundland.

The course was presented by ERA Architects and the Centre for Urban Growth + Renewal, with generous support from TD Canada Trust.

Instructors: William MacIvor & Philip Evans,
with special guests Michael McClelland & Calvin Evans.

The group said a tearful goodbye to our gracious hosts today, as we left to return to the mainland. We are so grateful for everyone’s support, generosity, and hospitality - this project really wouldn’t have been possible without everyone in town going so far above and beyond.

The team pulls together a few group shots in the fading evening light..

was hard to be productive on our last build day, since literally all afternoon we were spoiled with a delicious parade of treats delivered by our new Burlington family, from loaves of fresh baked bread and molasses, to black forest cake, to bake apple pie, to home-made berry slushes, to fudgesicles and lemonade. the team stepped up and worked late into the night to finish off the seats and benches, before joining our new friends for a pot of boiled muscles and fresh capelin cooked on the new fire-pit.

almost complete .. the team got the morning off today to recover from the festivities last night, and this afternoon we’ll have one final build session to put together the benches for the table and the moveable seats for around the fire-pit.

video-tour of the installation, before the final build day. only the seats, benches, and a few small details remain to be resolved..

Philip and Earl got up extra early this morning, to head out and take part in the food fishery. They brought in a good haul!
